Cruel Intent (2008)
American Mystery Award winner Jance's (www.jajance.com) fourth entry in his Ali Reynolds series finds the ex-television journalist defending her contractor when he's accused of having murdered his wife. Ali is mercifully no longer blogging at cutlooseblog.com, a narrative element that weighed down previous books in this series. The text is well written, engaging, and humorous, and the audio production, too, is of stellar quality, with actress Karen Ziemba giving each character a distinct personality. Other factors making this the best series offering to date are the addition of new characters and a tighter plot.
Trial by Fire (2009)
Former L.A. anchorwoman Ali Reynolds, now living in Sedona, Arizona, is asked by the county sheriff to fill in for his media-relations officer. Soon she becomes involved in the case of a woman who was badly injured in an arson fire and has no memory of the event or even her name. The feds take over the investigation from the county, but Ali is asked to help out by the victim鈥檚 hospital-appointed advocate, Sister Anselm. When the sister disappears, a worried Ali goes to find her and discovers she has been kidnapped. Fast pacing, surprising plot twists, and a strong, principled heroine make for a satisfying read. The fifth in the series.
