Another week, another issue in the Brightest Day saga. This time around we isolate on the storylines concerning Firestorm and the new Aqualad, Jackson Hyde. While I appreciate the more focused mentality that the book has taken over the past few issues, many of the plots haven't lived up to their potential, and Firestorm and Aquaman/lad's stories have been some of the weakest.
While the two characters of interest in issue #16 haven't impressed me so far, I was really hoping that giving them more time would help to make me sympathize with their plights. This was not the case. I genuinely want to like both Firestorm and Aqualad, but having their stories told in small bits, with less than impressive dialogue and leaps of logic from the characters in terms of their actions, I tend to find myself rolling my eyes at what I'm reading more than finding any real interest.
It is true that I didn't enjoy the issue, but that doesn't mean that it was uneventful. Both of the major storylines took a step forward, with Aqualad taking his mantle and Firestorm fatefully becoming what they had feared. For those still interested in all the story threads of Brightest Day, there is plenty to sink your teeth into here, but I know for myself that I found it to be a bore with the only redeeming quality being the artwork provided by Ivan Reis, Scott Clark and Joe Prado.
