Despite the appeal of Cassie Hack and her faithful "not a b***h" Vlad, issue #3's appeal lies in the amazingly entertaining narrative of Chris, Maggie, and Cat Curio (intrepid detective!). As the trio races to get home to an in-danger and pregnant Lisa, they encounter a swarm of zombie deer that winds up in a brutal bloodbath. Tim Seeley absolutely nails the dialog in this installment, slinging one-liners and amusing exchanges all throughout. Cat's insanity (not to mention her reference to Encyclopedia Brown) is the shining element of Hack/Slash #3 by far. The only pitfall of this is that I found myself bordering on disinterest whenever she wasn't around, including the scenes with our supposed lead, Cassie. That's the only real problem with this issue; the balance between narratives isn't as strong as it could be. However, with the different storylines all starting to converge, I'm betting that next month's installment will manage its characters a bit better.
