It's always kind of scary when Marvel or DC goes back into their timeline to retroactively insert new characters and continuity. Sometimes it's cool, and sometimes it comes off as hokey and forced. In the case of David Liss and Patrick Zircher's Mystery Men, it's absolutely the former. Mystery Men is a pulp-era Marvel Universe that introduces some brand new heroes out to solve the murder mystery of a young Broadway starlet. Liss uses the Depression-era setting for far more than, as he puts it in the issue's afterword, "speakeasies, dirigibles and awesome hats," though he fares well in that arena too. More importantly, Mystery Men presents issues of race and social status that ran rampant throughout the era, and Liss masterfully ties it together with the language of superheroes.
