The original Sybil book was true. Sybil herself stated later in life that everything in the book was true. Parts of Sybil’s story were documented and verified by her father. Sybil’s multiplicity has been verified by other professionals and her relatives.
Sybil Exposed’s author appears to have had an agenda to discredit the original Sybil story. The author of “Sybil Exposed” believes that MPD (now called DID) is a cultural construct. This is not supported by the scientific evidence. DID is found around the world and is caused by severe, repeated abuse. This is mentioned in the DSM-IV, the foremost psychiatric diagnostic book in the US and has been proven by 30 plus years of scientific research.
“Sybil Exposed” has been found to have errors, some of which have been written about in the comments and reviews here at Amazon. A good book to read for a balancing viewpoint is “Sybil in her own words.”

This reviewer says, “journalist Debbie Nathan gives proof that the allegedly true story was largely fabricated.” However, we don’t know that Nathan’s references are “proof” until we track down 5 or more of her references, and then compare the original document to what Nathan says. Until then, books such as this are best described as fictionalized accounts.
