Blaze of Summer by Alexander Goodman - continuing my Alexander Goodman trend. Published in 1967 by Guild Press.
Carnal Matters: Four Short Stories by Alexander Goodman - published in 1965. The best story is Irving, a story of gay sailors on shore leave in Hawaii and how to pick up straight guys.
De Profundis by Oscar Wilde - a letter written in prison in 1897. I'm on a gay history kick.
Going Down in La-La Land by Andy Zeffer - now a movie. This is a candid, sexy and outrageously funny look at what an actor will do to survive in Hollywood. Young, ambitious and gay, Adam Zeller arrives from New York with the looks and talent to become a star but soon finds himself lost in a seamy (and steamy) underworld of gay porn and male prositution, dealing with down-and-out directors, washed up starlets, crystal meth addicts and the pretty boy Hollywood A list. Struggling to find his way back to the yellow brick road of stardom, Adam gets a first-hand education on the X-rated film industry and finds out what really goes on in the town's top talent agencies. But it's not long before he's reduced to working as a male prostitute, turning tricks with a billionaire businessman and getting a peek inside the closet of one of America's most beloved TV stars. Inspired by the real-life experiences of author/actor Andy Zeffer ("The Fluffer"), "Going Down In La-La Land" is a sexy and scandalous look at the other side of Hollywood, where dreams are dashed and hopes replaced with heartbreak.
Happyland and Other Stories by Alexander Goodman - more Goodman, published in 1968.
Krakow Melt by Daniel Allen Cox - This second novel by Lambda Literary Award finalist Daniel Allen Cox (Shuck) is an incendiary story about two pyromaniacs who fight homophobia in Krakow, Poland, one of the fronts of the Solidarnosc revolution that eventually toppled the Berlin Wall in 1989. It's 2005, and Poland is grappling with its newfound role as a member of the European Union; the nation dips into moral crisis as Pope John Paul II (a Pole) hovers near death while the country's soon-to-be president makes homophobic declarations.
Radek, a bisexual artist and a practitioner of the extreme urban sport parkour, is convinced that fire is the great stabilizer. While creating miniature replicas of the world鈥檚 great infernos鈥旵hicago 1871, San Francisco 1906, London 1666鈥昲e meets Dorota, a literature student and budding pyromaniac. Driven by rage, sexual curiosity for one another, and Pink Floyd, they buck church, government, and the LGBT community to find sexual freedom, escaping their enemies by scaling the crumbling walls and ideas of the city.
Provocative and unnerving, Krakow Melt is at once a love letter and a fiery call to arms.
Shuck by Daniel Allen Cox - Shuck is the intense, dazzling diary of Jaeven Marshall, a quasi-homeless hustler who seeks his fame and fortune in New York, where he tries to manage his reputation as the city's porn star du jour when he's not dumpster diving, tweaking, or trying to get published. As his dreams of becoming a literary star grow dim, and when his love affair with a moody painter becomes hopelessly messy, he tries to reconfigure his life by documenting obsessive lists from found trash, and by hustling, which steals little pieces of his body and scatters them all over the city.
Shuck is a remarkable peep show of a novel about what binds artists and prostitutes, and the collateral damage that happens when they try to recover what they have lost.
Taking Care of Mrs. Carroll by Paul Monette - Tied together by various connections with Mrs Beth Carroll, an assorted group spend a summer together in a splendid mansion on an Atlantic coast estate. Veteran Beth Carroll, the owner; her never fully dressed gay houseboy, young handsome and lithe David; Phidias her elderly Greek estate manager, are joined by Rick, David's one time lover; and Rick's glamorous and famous friend, the ageing Dietrich-esque Madeleine Cosquer. Forty-something LA queen and very wealthy Aldo, Madeline's agent; and Beth's closeted gay son Tony make later additions to the party.
Beth, realising her death is imminent, wants to protect her estate from developers, but she dies before she can sign the will. Phidias, her life long secret lover, hatches a plan to outwit Beth's family and her lawyer, which is the reason behind the gathering.
So proceeds the bizarre account of events, narrated by Rick, which as well as revealing the scam, takes us on a complex tour of the interconnections between the various characters, and a constant series of surprises. Then there is the question of David and Rick's relationship. David walked out on his older lover a few years ago, leaving Rick heartbroken; will this summer see them getting back together again?
Monette tells his story in a languid, yet witty and entertaining fashion. A crazy plan combined with a moving love story involving some fascinating characters makes this a most pleasurable read.
The Ballad of Reading Gaol by Oscar Wilde - a poem written by Wilde in 1897 after his release from prison.
The War for Cole's Sexual Orientation by Nicholas Shapiro - The neuro-science faculty of a small California college posts an on-line appeal for subjects to take part in a trial procedure. The fact that the procedure involves the hypothalamus region of the brain, which regulates gender and orientative behavior, and the stipulation that the applicants be homosexual, instantly ignites a controversy. As the implications of the approaching neuro-surgery become clear, the faculty, headed by the neuro-scientist Dr Lacey, rapidly becomes the center of a culture war between liberals and conservatives.
Cole Lasseter, eighteen, and only recently having 'come out,' isn't making much progress in the evangelical-based 'reparative therapy' course he has been enrolled in by his parents. He is entered into Dr Lacey's programme.
Dr Lacey may have uncovered the precise neural-nets underlying sexual preference, and be able to influence the genetic component of homosexuality. The dizzying implication - the possibility of homosexual people having the option of an elective procedure to 'orientatively-reassign,' causes an escalation of protest as outside groups descend upon the campus.
The narrative is told through a chorus of voices; a succession of different perspectives 鈥?and agendas 鈥?of the activists, parents, subjects, friends and lovers involved in the momentuous events leading up to Cole's procedure, with a final twist, as the story culminates, as to the actual 'definitive' voice behind the story.
