A simple-minded serpent wreaks havoc with two modern-day Adams and their Eves in this light-as-a-feather novel about a tropical Garden of Eden where all play and no work makes a dull boy a nice change.
Attractive, intelligent, wealthy, and childless, Constance and Peter Beale are even happily married. At least they are until Peter, a would-be writer, and Constance, a hopeful painter, decide to take up residence in an abandoned monastery in Cuernavaca. What better place to invite one's muse and, given the lush surroundings and enormous swimming pool, one's best friends as well. Enter Hal, a martini-drinking, free-thinking clergyman, and his wife, Jane, a minor merchant princess.
Halcyon days follow tropical nights in tranquil succession until the unexpected intrusion of Davey Jones. Devastatingly handsome, Davey is also extraordinarily dumb, entirely penniless, and knows no one in town except the Beales. They just can't get rid of him, so Peter puts him to work typing while Connie sets him to modeling for a mural she is painting in the pool house.
Since contempt is entirely out of place in this exotic Garden of Eden, familiarity soon breeds passion, and Connie and Peter find themselves hopelessly in love with the unsuspecting Davey. Horrified at her wanton thoughts, Connie turns to Jane for comfort. Convinced he is a hopeless hermaphrodite, Peter confides in Hal. Appalled at the possibility of a precipitous fall from their graceful existence, Hal and Jane take matters鈥攁nd Davey鈥攊nto their own hands in a whirlwind, madcap ending. Patrick Dennis proves once again that his mastery of the ridiculous is truly sublime.
