Academic Sanchez and his students analyze the effectiveness of the economic policies of the administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama. They argue that the Bush bailouts continued by Obama fail because they do not address productivity growth, which is the main factor driving our economy. Productivity “is attained via specialization, technological change, investment in human and physical capital, institutional development, and political stability (which requires fiscal and monetary restraints).” Topics of special interest include the role of information on decision making, why many regulations are counterproductive, analysis of the health-care sector, impact of labor unions, housing and financial disasters, and the negative role of war on the economy. The authors conclude, “Crony capitalism (consisting of collusion among market players and government officials) must be defeated by market competition and a stop to the excessive growth of the money supply and the public debt.” Views in this book may add to policy debates, but its complexity could limit its appeal to many library patrons.
