The Lonely Hearts Club by Elizabeth Eulberg:
After a devastating betrayal by the boy she thought she was destined to be with forever, Penny Lane Bloom (who fortunately inherited her parents鈥?love of the Beatles to go with her name) swears off guys and quietly starts the Lonely Hearts Club. To her surprise, many of her girlfriends are also sick of high-school guys and want to join鈥攅ven Diane, Penny鈥檚 former best friend and one-half of the school鈥檚 power couple until a recent, amicable breakup. The club grows and becomes an influential social force as members meet every Saturday night, go to dances together, and support one another in their academic and extracurricular pursuits. But conflict arises when the school administration fears the group is getting too powerful and 鈥渕aking the boys feel bad,鈥?and Penny finds herself torn between her no-boy pledge and the courteous advances of one of the nicest guys she knows鈥攚ho happens to be Diane鈥檚 ex-boyfriend. This first novel will be a draw for readers looking for an upbeat take on friendship, empowerment, and finding romance without losing yourself. Grades 7-10.
Prom and Prejudice by Elizabeth Eulberg
Eulberg retells Jane Austen鈥檚 still popular tale of class, love, and danger both emotional and physical. Setting this version in a contemporary Connecticut school for the socially elite, and casting Lizzie Bennett as a scholarship student and musical prodigy, Eulberg鈥檚 story unfolds along lines predictable both from the original plot and the spate of recent 鈥渕ean rich girls鈥?novels. That said, this version does justice to Austen and shows up the utter silliness of kids rich in material鈥攁nd designer brand name鈥攇oods, the moodiness of some males (not often mined in YA literature), and the ways truth can be hidden by both outright lying (on the part of Wick, the villain of the piece) and shyness (both Lizzie鈥檚 and Darcy鈥檚). This makes, in all, a fairly delightful blend of past and present value systems and social expectations. For those who haven鈥檛 read the original, that will be the obvious next stop; for those who have, there鈥檚 fun to be had in forecasting how Eulberg will rescript each upcoming scene.
