The story is set in Mexico City. Its hero (the word is used loosely) is Leander Starr, one of the world's most famous directors and the world's most famous deadbeat.
Leander is on the lam (the word is used discreetly) from the U.S. Department of Internal Revenue; from two overdue back alimonies; from the bills for support of his long-distant, long-unseen daughter; and from a formidable millionairess, Mrs. Worthington Pomeroy, a longing lady between fifty and death who could put Mr. Starr back on Easy Street鈥攊f only he could bear the sight of her.
Enter Catalina Ximinez, star of his great film, Yucatan Girl; Lady Joyce, rich and lovely and one of Starr's many ex-wives; Mr. Guber, of Teaneck, New Jersey, an intensely devoted employee of the Department of Internal Revenue; Emily Starr, the great man's beautiful and (almost) grown-up daughter; a dashing (in both interpretations) young American con man; the indefatigable Mrs. Pomeroy; and, of course, the observant narrator himself, Patrick Dennis, who tells all (or all that the law allows) about them.
