Move over, Mame! You've been replaced by Lydia Fennessey (n茅e Lena Leach), who elbowed her way up from a tacky luncheonette in Mackinaw City, Mich., to glittering stardom as the self-proclaimed (and hotly-contested) First Lady of the fabulously rich Fennessey family. And Lena--oops!--Lydia--is not about ot be thrown over, thank you--not by any mindless sister-in-law with a paid-for title, not by old Gramps in the attic, who parlayed a recipe for home brew into vats full of money, and certainly not by some young upstart tutor named John Wesley Smith, as if he were a walking Sunday Night Young People's Group, of all things. Too ridiculous!
And ridiculous it is--as well as madly, wildly, sidesplittingly funny--when John Wesley, brimming with ideas for good works, bumbles innocently into the considerably less than innocent world of the Fennesseys and their billion-dollar foundation "for the Furtherance of the Arts and Sciences" (and the Fennesseys). He thinks he's going to be Director of Projects. The Fennesseys think he's going to tutor their offspring. And the IRS is beginning to have some thoughts of its own.
Prudence dictates that the foundation quickly develop a social conscience, and the Fennesseys throw their enormous all into the arts, with Lydia, Gramps, John Wesley, a wild irish poet, and a host of greater and lesser Fennesseys getting into the uproarious act.
Any resemblance to any foundation living, dead, or infirm, is purely coincidental.
