A vampire longs for humanity in this uneven first novel. After a ritual in which her coven lover sacrifices himself, centuries-old European vamp Lenah wakes up as a wealthy, mortal student at a swank New England boarding school. She acclimates quickly to her new life and is even drawn into a love triangle with sensitive artist Tony and hot jock Justin. But the clock is ticking as the rest of Lenah’s coven hunts for her, intent on bringing her back into the undead fold, whether she wants it or not. Maizel’s earnest, detailed prose leans toward the self-conscious, and her contemporary teen dialogue is occasionally awkward: “I’ve loved you for, like, ever so there’s no use in, like, convincing me it’s not true.” More compelling are the flashbacks of Lenah’s violent, romantic history, rich in vampire lore, even though the transitions are not always smooth. Nevertheless, Twilight fans looking for more fodder to satisfy their insatiable hunger for paranormal romance will find some sustenance here.
