Ever since Fear Itself reared its head in the pages of Invincible Iron Man, Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca's Tony Stark epic has seen a dip in quality. That's not to say the book has become a terrible mess. The writing is still sharp and witty, the art is still fantastic; but it seems a bit of the focus has been misplaced.
The one major problem I have with Invincible Iron Man # 504 is that Matt Fraction never really successfully connects the reader with the gravitas of Tony's current situation. We're constantly told that Tony is flying through real people turned to stone, crushing them into dust. But the weight of the situation is never felt. Maybe if Fraction had introduced us to a person from Paris, France, as the issue's introduction, then the big dramatic hook would have landed better. As it stands, the central catastrophe of this issue falls flat. The only point in this issue where the situation is put into perspective is with the final page.
