Keys to the Kingdom #3 was easily one of my favorite comics of 2010. The insanely talented duo of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez outdid themselves by delivering a powerful, moving and surprisingly humorous chapter that spanned an entire month in the lives of the Locke children. Yet never once did it seem rushed or disjointed.
So just how do they follow up such an amazing feat? Easy -- by adding Nazi dinosaurs... with guns.
It's light on the action, but there are revelations a-plenty in this issue that, surprisingly, works fantastic as a stand alone as well as part of the larger tapestry. Part of the fun of Locke & Key is its unpredictability and not knowing what's around the next corner, and Rufus' inclusion certainly falls into that category. I'm also pleasantly surprised to see Sam back in the picture.
Though I won't spoil the specifics, the two characters cross paths and add yet another layer to the already deep and engrossing storyline. The book can get a bit heavy with the exposition at times, but the conversations being had never feel unnatural.
Even several arcs into his fantastic story, Joe Hill still manages to craft an accessible issue that any curious comic reader can enjoy. There's really no excuse for passing up this book if you see it on the stands.
