The Shadowland event at Marvel Comics has been a hit and miss. While the premise was cause for initial excitement, the execution of the events portrayed in the Daredevil centric saga has caused it to feel for the most part flat. It also doesn鈥檛 help when the publisher decides to flood the market with books with the Shadowland moniker with the apparent sole purpose of cashing in on what they perceived to be a big time event. Now some of these books have been good and have introduced a new element to the overall story. Unfortunately, though, a vast majority have been tales that could have been told elsewhere. Case in point is this issue that I am reviewing.
Dan Slott tells a nice little story in the vein of a buddy cop movie. Spider-Man and Shang-Chi are facing off against the Hand and Mr. Negative and his henchman who are fighting amongst themselves. Negative realizes that by eliminating Daredevil and the Hand he can easily extend his power base while the Hand are trying to prevent just that. Of course, being the do-gooders that they are, the heroes can鈥檛 just turn a blind eye towards that death and destruction that is occurring hence them joining the fray.
The major gist of the story is to show how close Spider-Man and Shang-Chi are. Shang-Chi has been affected by Negatives dark touch which causes the recipient to have the darker side of his psyche be brought to the forefront and be the dominant personality. As a result Shang-Chi has Spidey on the ropes and can easily kill him as Spider-Man has refused to fight his friend. Yet it is the friendship and faith that Peter holds in his friend that allows Shang-Chi to fight off the effects and come to his senses one again and restore his humanity. Along the way there are some touching moments that greater detail the friendship and mutual respect that the two heroes have for one another. The real star is Mr. Negative who continues to impress whenever he gets the chance. I look forward to seeing more of the character in Amazing Spider-Man.
The Paulo Siqueira art had some great moments and it reminded me of Steve McNiven circa Civil War. In sticking with the Shadowland theme the artists chose a darker template which is fitting considering that it pertains to crime and the underworld of Hell鈥檚 Kitchen. The art did suffer from a static like feeling in which, most evident in action scenes, it felt like you were merely looking at a drawing instead of being drawn into the fantasy.
What it boils down to is the fact that Shadowland: Spider-Man is a blatant attempt to cash in on the popularity of Spidey and entice readers who are interested in the Shadowland saga into purchasing this book. However, this story could have easily and more justifiably found a better home in Amazing Spider-Man as opposed to this. Perhaps if this had somehow tied into Shadowland and offered a purpose to the larger story it would be much more enjoyable. In the end, despite the fact that it is an endearing buddy story, I sort of feel cheated because it had little to do with Shadowland.
