Big changes and shocking twists were promised for this issue of Amazing Spider-Man. As long as you don't buy too heavily into the hype machine, issue #654 proves to be one of the more enjoyable chapters of Dan Slott's run so far. This issue more or less wraps up the conflict with the Spider-Slayers. Along the way, Peter whips up a new gadget, various supporting characters make heroic stands, and bad things befall good people. There are issues with Slott and Fred van Lente's (who returns as co-writer again) pacing of the story. As with last week's installment, too much attention is devoted to random asides, including another near-miss involving Spidey's identity. The final battle against Smythe also cuts out fairly abruptly and prematurely. It may be that the next issue isn't so much an epilogue as a legitimate fourth part to this arc.
