The Loving Couple (1956) is the third of four novels by Patrick Dennis (Edward Everett Tanner III) written under the pseudonym of Virginia Rowans. Upon its publication, it became a bestseller at the same time as Dennis鈥?Auntie Mame and Guestward Ho!, making Patrick Dennis the first author ever to have three books simultaneously on the bestseller list.
The Loving Couple is written as two separate novellas, both covering the same twenty-four hours in the disintegration of a suburban marriage. His Story follows the husband as he leaves his wife and spends a day coping with grasping starlets, his vulgar employers, and his shabby friends; Her Story follows the wife as she spends her day trying to pick up the pieces of a failed relationship while fending off her arrogant family, her man-hungry friend, and a Southern gigolo on the make. The two stories meet, tangle, and climax in the seedy nightclubs and streets of mid-century Manhattan.
The Loving Couple was originally printed, as a gimmick, with His Story and Her Story back to back, with the covers reversed, so that a reader could at whim begin reading either story, then upon completion turn the book over and upside-down, and read the other spouse鈥檚 point of view. As in so much of life, the two stories met somewhere in the middle.
For the purposes of this electronic version I鈥檝e arbitrarily put His Story first, and let Her Story have the last word. Please be aware that the two versions might just as easily be read in the other order, however.
