David Hine's relaunch of The Spirit under the First Wave banner has been consistent, if not perfectly decent fun with every outing. That all changes with issue #10. In fact, The Spirit #10 might be one of the most depressing comics I've read in the last few months. Granted, that doesn't mean it's not great.
Hine changes things up a bit for the first time during his run, delivering a done-in-one standalone issue in which The Spirit is merely a peripheral character. The true star of the book is small-time thief Roscoe Kalashnikov, a peculiar, unstable stable thug who in an effort to justify his existence to himself, murders a man in cold blood. The rest of the issue is spent showcasing Roscoe's increasing paranoia towards his capture by The Spirit, despite that fact that the fedora wearing hero is completely oblivious to the crime. The Spirit #10 is ultimately a grim, disturbing adventure through the mind of a lost soul, and the kind of dark fare that I certainly wasn't expecting when I cracked open this issue.
