This essay proposes a theory of psychosis based on a link between sleep and hyperarousal. It is argued that the phenomenological similarities between psychosis and dreams arise from the fact that sleep can occur, not only in states of deafferentation and low arousal, but also in states of hyperarousal resulting from extreme stress.
