Retelling and expanding upon a well known and beloved classic is risky business, but Kay acquits herself with brio in this retelling of Gaston Leroux's 1911 tale, The Phantom of the Opera . In a powerful and moving tour de force (the American debut for this British writer whose first novel, Legacy , won the Georgette Heyer Historical Novel Prize and the Betty Trask Award), she adds a new depth and perspective, moving well beyond the familiar boundaries of the story. This version begins with the birth of the horribly disfigured Erik and continues into the years following his doomed romance with Christine, ending in an unexpected and triumphant redemption. The narrative encompasses Erik's disastrous formative years with his mother, his caged existence among a gypsy tribe and a period of relative happiness in Rome, where he perfects his skills as an architect and builder. He goes to Persia, where he masters his talent for torture and murder and, finally, he is involved in the construction of the Paris Opera House--and the creation of his labyrinthine world beneath that structure. Haunting and unforgettable, this is a book to be savored, a sensual and often poetic exploration of a man's internal conflict between good and evil and of a search for love amidst darkness and despair. I have begged and begged Recorded Books to bestir themselves for this book.
Please, please, if you have it, share. Every book has to be shared in order to reach the true beauty of its life.

At one point in time, I practically had this book memorized. During a period of time where I didn’t have much to do, I actually typed the whole thing out so I could have it as an ebook. I converted it to a PDF using a free PDF converter (this was several yeas ago, mind you) and it messed up the formatting quite a bit. Converting it back to a Word document (I have sadly lost the original that I typed) didn’t really help, so my version of the ebook is in need of retyping. Since I’m fairly sure it is against the law to redistribute copyrighted material like this, I can’t really share it, but I just wanted to let you know that typing it out myself was a great experience. I felt like I got to know the story even better! Sure it took a month to do it, but I got really fast at typing by the time I was done. I maxed out at nearly 100 wpm and still maintain about 85 wpm to this day. This book has literally done more for me than almost any other book I’ve ever read!

I was fortunate enough to find a copy of this book a few years ago when it came back into print, and today it is very affordable. It’s a wonderful story for fans of the original novel by Leroux. It gets into the area of Fanfiction towards the end, but for the most part it remains true to the original novel.
