The house was an elegant Long Island showplace, with forty rooms and acres and acres of beach and gardens. There were ten servants inside and six gardeners outside, and champagne flowed like water. That was in 1885 when the house was new and dear Papa ranked high among the robber barons.
Today the house, like many an aging beauty, is falling slowly to decay, as dear Papa's daughter, Lily Ames, finds it increasingly difficult to keep a cook at the stove, a meal on the table, and a balance in the bank. Imagine her distress, then, when she finds she will be playing hostess to twelve wildly ill-assorted people over the long Fourth of July weekend . . . just as the servants decide to quit, the telephone company discontinues service, and her whole world, she knows, is coming to an end.
The guest list includes Lily's rich and flighty sister, Violet, who lives in a world of chin straps, eye pads, frown plasters, and lubricating creams and keeps her hennaed head awhirl with dreams of being a girl again; Uncle ned, a genial old gentleman of eighty-six who only regret is that he is an American, who dresses in the manner of the Edwardian beaux, and who can regale you indefinitely with anecdotes about titled corpses; stylish Claire Devine, who has risen high in the world of fashion and intends to go higher via marriage with young Paul Ames; Manning Stone, a dashing bachelor of dubious history whose travels through a series of boudoirs have led to an 'understanding' with tall, ungainly Kathy Ames; hot-tempered Elly Ames, who years for a young man who comes not only from the wrong side of the tracks, but the wrong side of the Hudson; General Cannon, who still rises at the sound of reveille and takes a morning ride on his horse named Truman; and many others.
Join them over the Fourth. Come for cocktails and dinner, for bathing and tennis, for the General's garden party, for the dinner dance at the North Shore Bath and Tennis Club.
