El Diablo En Texas (Chicano Classics 5) (English and Spanish Edition)
This short novel, 1990 winner of the Western States Book Award for Fiction, takes place in Presidio, Texas at three distinct historical periods. Subtly weaving autobiographical reality with mythical symbolism, the author episodically elaborates on the long-term effects of the multigenerational Anglo-Chicano conflict. The bilingual arrangement benefits readers able to compare the text in both languages, since the translation often fails to capture the nuances of Brito's different linguistic styles. Despite its literary merit and a fine introduction by Chicano scholar Charles Tatum, this novel is of limited appeal and is best suited for libraries in the American Southwest or those supporting Chicano programs.
